Monday’s Ministry Encouragement: Written to encourage you, my friend in ministry, to be refreshed and renewed as we live for Christ and look toward the Bema.
“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!” These were the words of the introduction of the famous television series, Star Trek.
Every Sunday evening, Seth Williams, a retired school teacher sends a Facebook messenger note of encouragement to remind me that he and his wife are praying for me. Each note contains a devotional thought from a scripture passage that is the foundation for his encouragement. In a recent message, he included this phrase, “to boldly go where no man has gone before,” to spur me on to be bold in the challenges of life “because the Lord will always be our helper. We can continue to depend on Jesus.”
As I pondered those words, my mind was drawn to the subject of prayer. Has any man gone where no man has gone before . . . in prayer? In other words, when you consider the vast nature of God, His immensity, how far can a man go in asking God to work, to answer prayer? Do we pray “beyond the universe” in prayer?
Prayer always begins with God, not man. Therefore, when you pray . . .
- Consider the immense nature of God (Job 38-41).
- Believe the promises of God (1 John 5:14).
- Rest in the character of God (Hebrews 11:6).
- Abide in Christ (John 15).
For several weeks, a dear wife had pled with her husband to register for an upcoming men’s retreat. He had sternly refused. After an announcement about the retreat had been made at the conclusion of the morning service, the congregation was invited to stand for closing prayer. There, this wife cried out to a big God to move in a big way, “God, I have done all I know to do. It’s out of my hands!” As soon as “amen” was said, this lady’s husband looked at her and said, “I need to go register for the men’s retreat.” Not only did he register, but he got another man to do so as well.
Ministry friend, are your prayer requests boldly going where no man has gone before? God can answer far beyond what you can imagine. For with God nothing will be impossible (Luke 1:37).

I don’t mean this as criticism, I’m just noting that it’s interesting to see Star Trek used as a jumping off point for Christian discussion as Star Trek has to be one of the most irreligious shows I can imagine (esp. since it aired in the sixties). Again, not criticizing, I think it’s a good use of pop culture to make a point.
Thanks, Jeff, so much for reading and commenting. Encouraging!
