Pastor, What Do You See?

“How have you seen God at work in your life today?”

This is a question that I’ve posed to many believers over the years. The goal is not to put anyone on-the-spot but simply to acknowledge that God is always at work around us inviting us to join Him in His work (John 15:5). Watching God at work as well as joining Him in His work at His invitation is an adventure (John 14:21; Hebrews 12)!

As God works, it is always in unison with His character, His names and His word.

In ministry, it is so easy to get our focus on ourselves, our problems, failures, deadlines, successes, needs, fears, concerns and a host of other issues that we fail to see where and when God is working. We miss connecting Who He is to what is happening around us. Let’s admit it, but more often than we want to say, we as pastors are pushing the ministry. We have a vision of how things should be done or what we expect. We work, grunt, and labor for hours on end in our strength because we must get the job done!

Seriously, the issue is not “How have you seen the pastor at work today?”, but “How have you seen God at work?” (1 Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 2:10)

As you cultivate the rhythm of a personal life of prayer, you will become more keen to see God at work. Your heart will be more sensitive to His leading. This is part of the personal relationship that we enjoy with God (John 17:3; Philippians 3:10; 2 Peter 3:18)

As you meditate on the Word throughout the day, your thoughts will be connected to your Heavenly Father, and you won’t miss His work. You will rest in His work, His character and His promises. (Matthew 11:28-30)

How have you seen His omnipotence, omniscience, grace, mercy, love, compassion, etc. today in your life as well as others?

(How grateful I am to have been influenced greatly back in the 90’s by the “The Seven Realities of Experiencing God” by Henry & Richard Blackaby & Claude King!!)

  1. One of the important lessons that I have learned is that I do my most powerful ministry during times when I am interrupted and need to set aside my routine. An emergency call…. A need to drop everything and go to a hospital to provide support and care…. An unexpected telephone call or visit….

    1. Yes, indeed! What we might consider to be an interruption is actually God’s leading, His appointment that He initiated!! Thanks so much for reading and for your encouragement in doing so!!
