The Red Sea and Still Waters

The Red Sea

This year, I am using the Discipleship Journal’s Book-at-a-Time Reading Plan as a guide for reading through God’s Word.  Yesterday morning was a special feast as I read Exodus 12-14 and Psalm 23.  For me, two most familiar passages met together to refresh my soul and give me counsel.  As I read Exodus 14, it was like the very first time! So much to see, to consider, to think about, to put myself in their shoes!  Then I read Psalm 23, and it all came together.

1  The LORD was Israel’s Shepherd; they had all they needed.

2  He made them lie down in green pastures, not Egyptian soil.  He led them beside still waters as the Red Sea stood in rapt attention as the millions crossed.

3  He restored their fainting, troubled, complaining soul as He led them in the right path for His name’s sake that Pharaoh and the Egyptians would know He is God.

4  They walked through the valley of the shadow of death on dry ground and did not need to fear the approaching army of Pharaoh because their Shepherd was with them.  His rod would defend them from their enemy, His staff would control and comfort them along their way.

5  He most definitely prepared a table before them in the presence of their enemy and what a “banquet” it was!  He anointed their head with oil to empower them on their journey and remove their fears, irritation and conflict. Their cup most definitely overflowed with the abundance of God’s grace!  When they came to the other side, the abundance of their joy overflowed into praise and song!

6  Indeed, as Israel looked over their shoulder, they could see that goodness and mercy had pursued them all through that day and night, and they dwelled in the presence of their God, their Shepherd.

Today, take Psalm 23 and put your day into each verse and watch our Shepherd take you through the Red Sea beside still waters for His name’s sake.

“Pray for . . .”

It is no coincidence that in doing some major study through chapter one of Nehemiah yesterday that I would hear throughout the day via phone conversations, text messages and emails, the following:  “Pray for my unsaved sister!”  “Pray for the salvation of a dear friend.”  “Pray for my son who has returned to the Lord and is starting to faithfully attend church!”  “Pray for a miracle in regards to my grandchildren.”  “Pray for my wife’s health.”  “Pray for a wayward son!”  “Pray for my upcoming surgery as well as where we will be come this summer.” What a sincere privilege to hear the heart of someone share their need, their burden, and then join them at the Throne of Grace (Hebrews 4:14-16).

Prayer.  Something we hear talked about; we run to in times of trouble or confusion; or is sadly lacking in our lives.  Nevertheless, as I have studied Nehemiah in recent days, one truth has stood out to me.  When Nehemiah heard the report of distress, disrepair, and disregard in Jerusalem, he did not run to take matters into his own hands.  He did what Genesis 1:1 reminds us for all of life, “In the beginning, God.”  In response to the news, he began with God.  When he started praying, he began with God acknowledging His character before sending up his petitions.  When a prayer burden comes your way– in the beginning, God.  When you don’t what to pray for—in the beginning, God.  The greatest way to share in prayer for others, for a time of distress, disrepair and/or disregard, start with God.  He is the Alpha and the Omega and all in between!  So when someone says, “Pray for . . . “, immediately begin with God.

Swype &Words

My wife and I have the same Android smart phones.  One of the features of our keypads is something called Swype.  Instead of pressing each letter on the keypad while preparing a text or email message, we just use our finger to swipe or slide from one letter to the next.  All of you android users know what I’m talking about.  Well, many times, Swype doesn’t “read” the way my mind is thinking and my finger is suppose to be moving.  Therefore, I have to be careful as to what my non-Christian phone dictionary thinks I’ve swiped.  For instance, instead of my return text reading, “I’ll be praying for you,” it reads “I’ll be pursuing you.”  Now, that is not what you want to say to a female church member who just sent you a prayer request!!  When I want to use the name “God” it puts up the word “good.”  My smart phone is not smart when it comes to spiritual things or applications.

Swype on my smart phone is much like my everyday thought life.  There is much information in my mind that I have accumulated over these past 55 years.  As I respond to life situations or think through a scenario in my mind, what comes up as I swipe through my thoughts?  Is my response biblical or self-centered?  As I swipe through my thoughts, does it give me a passage of scripture or one of my humanistic viewpoints?

So that I can receive the proper message when I swipe, I need to slow down and spend time in God’s Word receiving His message and meditating on His thoughts.  Psalm 94:19 says, “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”  As you Swype through your mind today, will God’s thoughts delight your soul?  Will they guide your steps?  Will they give you the “proper word” on life?

Monday’s Musings

Looking back over last week, the word that comes to mind is “memories.”

  • On Wednesday, I turned 55.   Conversation with Denise, her family and friends recounted memories of childhood escapades in the snow, various events with my in-laws such as attending southern gospel concerts, as well as remembering my Dad and his way of life.  I saw videos from 20-plus years ago which included my girls, drove through mountain roads that were traversed many, many times in days gone by, and reminisced about marriage and the joy of knowing Denise 35 of those 55 years.
  • The latter part of the week brought back memories of a year ago when my Mom passed on to Glory.  On Thursday, I recounted walking into the back bedroom and seeing her take her last breath as Denise and Whitney were by her side.  This weekend, I was reminded that our weather was the same as last year as we travelled through snow to Dahlonega, Georgia, for her graveside service.  How appropriate because Mom loved the snow so much!  She was as much a kid as anyone when it came to sledding and walking through the snow.
  • Watching Andrew and Alli every weekend, who come up from Greenville, SC, to minister at BCBC, reminds me of my engagement years with Denise.  Young love is so much fun.  Old love matures, but is doesn’t have to lose its fun!
  • Due to the weather, we had only one service on Sunday as we met at 2:00 p.m.  What a special time for us to observe communion and remember that Christ took the curse for our sins, and He took our place as our substitute.  Listening to the small groups reading the Matthew 27 passage before each part of the communion service and then sharing what spoke to them from that passage was a rich blessing.  It will be another good memory of ministry at BCBC.
  • Having the Ledford’s drop by for dinner today on their way back home to NC reminded me of the many young couples that put their feet under my parent’s table over the years.  Many of them are going on for the Lord serving in various ministries and jobs.  I am grateful for my parent’s example, especially my Dad’s love for hospitality!  “Aww, Ruth Ann, we’ll just order up a pizza!” J

When you reminisce, you find that life is hard, but God is good.  Life is fun, and God is faithful.  Life has its ups and downs, but God is immutable. Life comes in various sizes and ways, but God’s grace is sufficient. Thank You, Lord, for the ability to remember.  Remind me that even today I’m making more memories by your grace.
