Divine Order

Order.  I need it.  I  just read an article that describes a way of having better order in my home and my heart is leaning hard into her plan.  “Only keep that which brings you joy.” Hmm, she has me thinking and wondering if I can make this work!

The Lord also gives us  directives to have order in our lives and it comes through (brace yourself) submission.  Why do we squirm under that term?  If we obey it, it will bring even more calm and blessing than perfectly ordered dresser drawers! Through submission a nation is honored, a home is at rest, and a church is guided.  Consider what Peter 5 tells us:

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

Feed the flock of…

Day 14: Stewardship

IMG_5213 This is typical. Two bags of chips, fruit loops, and any other food that may be in sight on Ellie’s bed for consumption. All. At. Once.

I mentioned a couple days ago that one of our oncologists brought us a copy of John Piper’s booklet Don’t Waste Your Cancer. If I could, I would just put the entire booklet up for you to read, but I don’t think any publisher would be happy about that, so I’ll just share with you a few things that spoke directly to Jon and I in this. Obviously, the cancer isn’t Jon’s or mine, and while we don’t feel the actual pain of cancer or treatments like Ellie does, we do feel the emotional pain of Ellie’s diagnosis and the responsibility to handle this situation in a way that we hope will allow God’s glory to shine through. We want to be good stewards of…

Day 13: Rest

IMG_1916Rest
Today was a day of restlessness for Ellie. Her struggle was between sleep and food. She would lie down for 5 minutes and sleep, then wake up with a definite urgency for food. This happened all morning long, and finally, at 2:45 p.m., I decided that she was going to sleep better cuddling with mama. So that’s what we did for an hour.

There are multiple verses that come to my mind when I think about the idea of rest.

I think about peace.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep; for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8

I think about trust.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy…

Day 12: Change

IMG_5204Change
I already mentioned how easily I let go of control. A big factor in that is that I’m a planner. I drive my husband crazy with my planning. The “So, when do you want to leave in the morning,” or “I was thinking maybe we could…” or “So next month…” Oi.

Let me just tell you, leukemia and chemo was not on my calendar. But it didn’t surprise God.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LordFor as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9

I’m thankful I don’t know God’s complete plan for this. We are trusting him day by day and resting on His promises to us. I have heard multiple people say during trials, “God won’t give you more than you…

Day 11: Care

IMG_5203Care
We have been blown away by the response we have seen from others. The love that is being shown to our family is crazy to try to fathom. We have been cared for by complete strangers who are co-workers or friends of my family. We have been given all kinds of things that are all helpful for us. I just wanted to share with you some of the ways God has cared for our family in ways we didn’t even think to ask.

  • A co-worker of my sister had memberships donated for our family for both the Tennessee Aquarium and the Creative Discovery Museum for the month. These are both things that we wanted to take Brooklynn to and have been waiting for the right time. Now we can go anytime we want for the rest of the month. This is awesome because we can just pop in and spend 30…

Day 10: Alone

IMG_5194Alone
We aren’t alone in this journey, and that’s something we’re very thankful for. We have been contacted by various support networks for families dealing with cancer. We have been reached out to by friends, acquaintances, or people who have just seen our story and wanted to share their journey with us. We have been told of stories with all kinds of varied outcomes. We also realize we aren’t the first people to have a child with leukemia. We are benefiting from others who have already walked this road. In the end, we are coming to terms with the fact that we are a cancer family, and that we’re part of a whole new community now.

Even if none of these people had reached out to us, we know that we still would not be alone. Even the nights that Jon and I rotate at the hospital don’t seem very…

Day 9: Burdens

IMG_5075Burdens
Today has been hard for me. Jon isn’t feeling well today, and it has been the busiest day for Ellie since her surgery last week. We had a lumbar puncture and two different chemos on the chart for today. (Some people consider her steroids chemo and others don’t. She will receive the steroids twice a day for the first 27 days [we are on day 8 of treatment]. The chemo I’m talking about is on top of those steroids). Ellie is starting to get the sick “red-eye” look of someone battling something serious. I have chosen to be thankful for every moment with her, but I do know that this is going to start getting hard soon as we see the chemo begin to take it’s toll on her little body. God formed Ellie in my womb and He formed her knowing exactly what she was going to face. My heart…
