Day 23: Refining

IMG_5312Refining
Our pastor is at it again! 🙂 He has been a continual encouragement to us from across the country. He shared this verse with us a couple of days ago and said it jumped off the page at him. It has definitely been a soothing salve to our hearts as well.

Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. For mine own sake, will I do it: for how shall my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.”
Isaiah 48:10-11

He explained this passage this way:

It isn’t always about chastening, purging, or correction. Sometimes God chooses the platform of affliction to simply make Himself BIG in the eyes of the audience.

We are thankful that in the “furnace of affliction” God’s grace is present, abundant, and sustaining. His grace is accessible to…

This past weekend was special, really, really special.  Our son-in-law had been studying for his ordination into the ministry for quite some time, and this past weekend was the time for him to sit before a council of godly men and give a defence for his doctrinal statement.  That was on Saturday.

It was a long, grueling four or so hours as the men asked questions and Andrew gave a bilibical answer about what he believes God’s Word teaches.  But it was even more than just getting the right answer – it was also stating his call from God into the Gospel ministry.  He didn’t just decide one day to “be a preacher.”  No, as a young lad, he had heard God’s Spirit leading him to be a preacher of the Word of God.

For years he has been praying, preparing, preaching, and looking forward to the day when it…

Day 21: Sweet

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

IMG_5285Sweet
I’ve heard rumors of a cinnamon roll in Texas that weighs 5 pounds. While Jon wanted to add a stop on our epic road trip of America, I personally think that’s just too much sweetness to be enjoyable. Though sugary sweetness can sometimes be too much to handle, it’s rare that you wish for less sweetness in life. We are learning that you appreciate the sweet times much more when you experience the not-so-sweet times.

We feel like this is a good correlation to the Gospel. When you begin to realize how sinful you really are, God’s gift of salvation becomes sweeter. When you think about all the torment that Christ went through, His willingness to do the will of His Father becomes more precious. God sent His Son so that He could offer us eternal life and redeem us from our sin. There was nothing in us that was desirable…

Day 20: Know

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

It’s easy to get scared when we lose our focus. We’re trying to keep our thoughts on what we know. The easiest truths we can think about always have to do with God.

Be still and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Isaiah 26:3

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord‘s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord

Day 19: Clarity

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

IMG_5265 This was actually during Ellie’s chemo infusion today. They both slept through most of it!

Clarity
The past few days have felt confusing (and a bit frustrating) as we hear one thing and then research to find another thing to be true. Or we are told something will happen at a certain time, and then it is either moved back or just done late. Clear communication feels so important at this point, but it doesn’t always happen.

I’m thankful that when I am frustrated by confusion, God is not. God already knows the outcome of Ellie’s leukemia. And I get to trust Him…not the medicines, not the communication, not the system.

God is powerful. The Bible is full of that reminder. He created the entire world. He rescued His people by parting a giant sea so they could escape across dry ground…and then He killed their enemies behind them. He toppled…

Day 18: Human

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

I don’t know how to explain this, except to say Jon and I are still human. We are experiencing the real grace of God when it comes to Ellie’s leukemia. While there are things that are confusing (and sometimes frustrating) in the midst of her treatments, we haven’t been angry with God because of this.

But, to be quite honest, I am struggling with my attitude in regards to a lot of other things. I know that there is a lot of stress in my life right now whether I feel stressed or not, but there is never an okay excuse for a bad attitude. I’m very aware of my responses to others currently, and I know that at times I am frustrated with people who are trying to help the best way they know how or with people who love me or with situations that don’t really matter…and of…

Day 17: Possession

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

When Jon and I were talking about our word for the day, he mentioned possession. As in, we keep saying “our” Ellie or people tell us they are praying for “your” Ellie, etc. But the truth is…Ellie isn’t my possession. She isn’t Jon’s or any other human being’s possession, either. She is God’s. Even though this stings my heart a little, ultimately I know that it’s true and she couldn’t be cared for by anyone better. I’m also thankful that God gave her to Jon and I to raise for Him.

I remember when we dedicated Ellie at church, and the prayer of our heart has always been for God to do His will in Ellie’s life. We have prayed the same prayer for Brooklynn, too. We are responsible for Ellie, but ultimately she belongs to God. We can’t get mad at Him for taking care of her how He sees fit…

Day 16: Sustained

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

IMG_5064Sustained
Our pastor emailed Jon and I this past Saturday and told us he is praying for God’s sustaining grace for us. I’m beginning to learn that God’s sustaining grace is needed to walk the road we are on. We’ve passed our 2-week mark in the hospital, and I honestly can’t decide if it feels like we’ve been here 4 months or 3 days. So much has happened so quickly that it seems impossible we have been here for only 16 days. And yet Jon and I both feel we have aged years in that time.

We’re getting into the routine even though each day is different. We both love our ministry jobs and are finding ways to fit work-related things into the random empty spots in the day. While we are so thankful and love being with family who are making things much, much easier on us, we are…

Day 15: Joy

audrey's avatar4 Moores in a Van

IMG_5246Joy
Joy is probably naturally one of the last things on a person’s mind as they go through a trial. But we know that joy isn’t natural after all – it’s supernatural. Joy is one of many items listed in the fruit of the Spirit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23

Because joy is a fruit of the Spirit and not a natural response, we know that it is possible to have joy no matter what our circumstances are. Joy comes from being Spirit-filled. My pastor recently reminded our church body, “As a Christian, we have a fountain of joy through the presence of the Holy Spirit that is disconnected from external stimuli. Regardless of what is happening around us and to us, we can have joy that stems from within.”
